Gyula Pauer: PSEUDO Paintings

Gyula Pauer: PSEUDO Paintings

Date: 17.09.2021 - 29.10.2021
Vernissage: 16.09.2021 6 - 9pm

The focus of Gyula Pauer’s (1941-2012) first solo exhibition at acb Gallery is on his pseudo painting program that became increasingly relevant in his oeuvre from the mid-1990s. Most of the works displayed were created after the artist’s large-scale retrospective exhibition at Kunsthalle, Budapest in 2005, during his creative period that is least familiar in the eyes of the audience.
Pauer’s artistic program was based on his Pseudo manifesto dating from 1970, which brought together conceptualism and the sensuality of sculpture to a common platform. His paintings reach back to the solid base of Pseudo within a new medium. The artist’s spray-gun paintings, like his earlier works which were conceptualized in the frame of sculpture, put the emphasis on the interplay of light and shadow, as well as on the contradiction of plasticity and two-dimensionality.

Gyula Várnai: My First Steps into the Uncertain

Gyula Várnai: My First Steps into the Uncertain

Date: 17.09.2021 - 29.10.2021
Vernissage: 16.09.2021 6 - 9pm

Gyula Várnai (1956) presents his latest works in a solo exhibition at acb Attachment. As early as in his project developed for the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017, Várnai already thematized the future, or more precisely, the perception of the future. His current exhibition reflects the fact that for the artist and his generation, the exploration of the universe and the broadening of our knowledge of it has always provided a positive prospect of the future.
Today, our vision for the future of humanity and the Earth is much more pessimistic and the optimistic momentum of future visions has been severely challenged. The title of Várnai's exhibition reflects on this process. To create the thematic framework for the works on display, Várnai draws inspiration from his amateur astronomical interests. This also stems from Várnai's artistic character, as since the 1980s he has drawn much of his inspiration for his work from the various natural sciences. In almost all of his new works, space appears in some form, whether it be star maps, images of moon landings, astronauts or fictional extraterrestrial civilisations.
